I am a brand new (and very poor) 2nd grade ESL teacher in Texas. I do not have any books that are appropriate for my classroom reading library. Does anyone have suggestions about collecting books? I live in a very small town, so flea markets are not an option. Thanks for ANY help you can give me!

If you are looking for specific books, one website I like to use is Amazon. Lots of times you can find the book you're looking for for 1cent (used) and then pay 3.99 shipping. I have done this a great deal and always had great luck and books are normally in perfect condition.
Or do scholastic classroom book orders, and use your bonus points to buy books for your classroom library. |

I also pick up age appropriate books at Goodwill -- granted that is a "hit or miss" type of shopping, but you can find some good books very cheap (beware though, look through the books to make sure the pages are there).

An idea that I did my first year was to call a used book store and tell them you are a new teacher and you don't have any books for your class (They get tons of books that they can't sell for one reason or another) and they may give you a bunch of books for either free or yard sale cost. I got 6 boxes of books. Some may need some minor repairs and some won't be useful but it is worth it. That should at least get you started while you gradually build your library.

Hi Bananas...I to live in a small town...but over the summer one saturday a month, I grab the city paper and my GPS system, and spend the day hitting yard sales looking for bargins...another idea is freecycle you have to register for the list, go to the website and look for a local group...you can post wants and offers...I got a box of books for free.
