A dear friend has asked me to work with her son this summer. He will be going into third grade. He repeated kindergarten. During his first grade year he had a tutor to keep him up to speed. That same tutor was his second grade teacher. Next year in third grade he will be changing classes 3 times--so 3 teachers and 3 different ways to do things. I can jump right in and try to teach him everything (impractical idea). Or I can ask you third grade teachers out there--what would benefit him the most to know from the onset: --multiplication facts? --cursive writing? --sight words? I will begin with the our state standards but there has to be something that makes a difference right from the start. Thanks for anything help you can give me.

Honestly, for math, I would start with addition facts (+3, 4, etc.) and adding three-digit numbers using strategies he may already know (ex-breaking it apart 159+48=100+50+40+8+9). He already may be comfortable with stuff like that, but I think it would be a good starting point to gauge what he already knows. If he is ready for multiplication facts (awesome!!), practice skip counting first. It seems less intimidating to kids when they use a skill they have used in previous grades to learn something "new".

For reading- sight words are good, but since you are just tutoring him, why don't you work on reading for enjoyment (while subtly teaching skills)? Find a fun book, something that catches his interest, like the Fudge books. Then take turns reading. After he reads, compliment something he did well, but then when you read, model things you would like to see him doing.

Sorry this is so long, but hope any of it helps!! Good luck, and have fun, teaching with no constraints=tons of fun!

Is this your first child to enter school? If so, then bless mom's heart now. :-)

Yes, he's my first to enter school! He's been to pre-school, but this is the real deal! He's excited and I'm nervous...not for him, more for me. Lol.
