Hi! I will be a 1st year kindergarten teacher in the fall and am currently shopping for my classroom. Are there any items for my classroom that I should definately buy? Any helpful hints to prepare myself for the school year? Thank you!

I am a new teacher to Kindergarten also! It will be my first year. I printed off the curriculum to be taught from the district's webpage. I also student taught Kindergarten last Fall. I have been to garage sales and been finding books. I picked up a reading chair also. If your district requires calendar time, I have been putting together the calendar pieces, "yesterday, today, and tomorrow" pieces, 100 day sticks for counting on a chart for the 100th day, some bulletin board signs for colors, shapes, numbers and letters, a word wall to get ready to post words as learned (I am also going to put their names with a picture of them on the word wall later), some items for a reading center. I am trying to get together centers, or have an idea. I need to email the principal-- but I don't know if I should until August. It is too stressful to want to wait until new teacher training!!

Going to garage sales is a good idea! I have been going to scholastic warehouse sales and bought books discounted there! I actually went in to my classroom today and it was helpful to see what it looked like and what I will need for next year. I also looked at the Teacher Editions of the books and that was helpful.

Something that I've found helpful on this site, in the store, is that you can list items in order of popularity. If you go to go a category of items that you're interested in you can see what other kindergarten teachers are buying.

Not only was I a first year kindergarten teacher last but, year I was a first year teacher period. Kindergarten is wonderful. Make sure you have pocket charts. You can use them in 100 differant ways and they keep you organized which is the BIG KEY for Kindergarten. This leads me to my hints. Make sure you have everything ready to go for the day and at your fingertips. Those littles have alot of energy and they will not wait. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. It keeps you calm and so does taking a few minutes out of the end of the day to reflect. Good Luck!!!!!!!

I will be a first year kindergarten teacher this fall. I think I have purchased just about everything from this site for my classroom, however I still need to purchase a schedule pocket chart, and another one for the 100 day of school counting.

Make sure that you know where the children will keep their completed work. I use chair bags that I had made for me. These can also be purchased premade. Some teachers place a large container in the center of each table for the children to keep their folders that contain the day's papers. If your school has a lot of buses, you will need to make bus tags ahead of time. My school has 20 buses. (a first and second load) I make bus tags out of orange and yellow bus diecuts. Orange represents the 1st load of buses and yellow is for the 2nd load. I also make green car tags for the car riders. That way I can quickly look around the room and see who is supposed to be going where at 3PM. I also make lunch tags for each child. I write the child's name and lunch number on these tags to help the cafeteria workers get them through the lunch line. These can be made now so that all you have to do later is add the needed info. on the tags after you get your class list. As soon as you are allowed to get into your clasroom make sure you have a space for: the children's bags, jackets, mats, etc. whole group time: easel, carpet centers: if you will be doing them That first day is caotic! Make sure you have thought EVERYTHING through ahead of time from walking in to packing up.

Welcome aboard! I LOVE Kdg. The rewards of teaching this level are enormous! My best advice is to be prepared for everything-plan, plan, plan! I also found it helpful to have a box for each day of the week to keep my supplies in/lessons. I also had an extra box filled with quick activities that I could just pull out and use if needed. When these little ones have to sit and wait around they get restless:) Garage sales are great, ebay, this site and surf the web for sales. Good luck! I will try to think of the things I can't live without... |

What do you do when your school is adopting a new reading and math program this year? I asked about long-range planning and my teammates said that they have nothing planned because it is impossible without having the resources. I understand, but as a new first year kindergarten teacher, I am starting to get worried as to what I am going to be able to have planned. Everyone always says to have at least the first three weeks planned out. I have nothing right now and school is going to start in less than 3 weeks!!!
