I like to do a thorough assessment of each student at the beginning of the year to address any weaknesses, but sometimes I struggle with how to keep the students busy when they're very much not independent. I want to give them things to do that aren't "busy-work", yet they need to be able to do the activities with little assistance. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Well, I've created a "What Can I Be Doing Now?" poster for students to refer to when they finish before the rest of the class on an independent assignment. Many of these ideas include quiet work such as organizing their binder, silent reading a book from the casual corner (in-class library area), etc.

For the beginning of the school year I have the students draw a picture that would help me and their classmates get to know them. After all the assessments are done, it takes about 3 min for the students to share their pics with the class. (allowing the students to draw gets you bonus points too!)
