I read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe every year with my 5th graders. I liked reading it better before the movie came out, though. Also Tuck Everlasting is a favorite! Great realistic fantasy that the students really get in to. The Spiderwick Chronicles is a good one. Obviously I am a fantasy kind of girl! But every now and then a good old Beverly Cleary is fun!

I read Miss Spitfire to my 5th graders this past year. It's a story made from Ann Sullivan's journal entries. It would be a difficult read on their own, but read aloud they seemed to understand it. After the book was completed we watched "The Miracle Worker". The kiddos all enjoyed it.

Babs, Thank you so much for the recommendation of Miss Spitfire. I'm always looking for great bios for my fifth graders. I sampled this at Amazon last night and plan on ordering soon. We show The Miracle Worker every year for a holiday movie, and I think this book will give my students much more appreciation of the film.

I read Frindle by Andrew Clements to my 5th graders last year, and they loved it and many began checking out his other books from the library.

I read Petey by Ben Mikaelsen - my class was absolutely in a trance when I read. It is a sad book, I had boys with tears, but they LOVED it!!!

Tuck Everlasting is one of my favorites!
Also try...
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler The Shadow Children Series by Margaret Peterson Haddix
All of my students love both of these! |
