On a suggestion I started playing classical music during quiet writing time, and for some reason it has greatly decreased my need to fight the kids to be quiet. I highly recommend this. If you have pandora it eliminates the need to buy music.

what a great idea! Have you ever done this while the students were testing? I've heard mixed opinions and thoughts on that.

I haven't tried that. It sounds like a good idea, though. I'm currently using it as a method of keeping order, but it appears to keep them focused better too, so it might be worth a try.

I've done it while the students are working on a certain thing, like Alligator puppets in Kindergarten- put on some Dr. Jean! It really does work!

Haven't tried it at school yet. I can say for sure that it works very well at home, however. Definitely worth a try at school.

Spa/Tranquil sounds (the CD's found in the kiosks that you can push a button to sample the music) are also good for writing time or silent reading. It also helps relax the teacher!

Brett, I sure have! We did writing after lunch when the kids are usually a little more antsy, and the tranquil sounds calm them right down!
